The assignment is to sketch out a hypothetical email campaign, and then send an automated email.
This is to encourage you to learn how to use a digital marketing tool on your own, as you’ll likely be doing things like this for the remainder of your life. In this case, you’ll teach yourself how to execute a simple, automated email campaign.
Instructions:
Select a hypothetical company/product/service and then sketch out an email campaign. Write-up a brief description/summary of the company/product (maybe a paragraph), and then describe the campaign objectives (maybe a paragraph), then describe what if any targeting/segmenting parameters you’ll set for the campaign (e.g., time of day, geographic location of recipients, desktop and/or mobile, what triggers will trigger sending the email such as recent purchase, or monthly newsletter, etc) and a note on why you’ve selected each parameter. For a primer or illustration of potential campaign parameters you can look at those provided in Mail-Chimp: https://mailchimp.com/help/all-the-segmenting-options/Links to an external site. or another automated services’ parameter settings (they’re all similar). Include in your submission, a paragraph describing the motivation for the design choices you’ve made in creating the email (e.g., why did you choose that particular subject, or photos, or text, ect.).
Then, create and send an email for your hypothetical campaign employing the guidelines provided in textbooks, our discussion in class, other instructional materials you may find online, and your personal expertise and creativity. Use an automated email service for this exercise such as Mail Chimp. (you can set up a free account on mail-chimp, and it makes creating quality emails easy). Once you’ve created your email, take screen shots of the subject lines, titles, body of text etc, and include these at the end of the write-up you’ll submit to the email assignment dropbox in Canvas. Finally, send the email to yourself (use one of your own email addresses as your email list).
There are plenty of online help recourses for how to do this. For example, simply googling “how to sign up for a free mail chimp account” and/or “how to send an email campaign on mail chimp” will get you 95% of the way there.
