Select your leitmotif.
1. Pick a selection of music that could be considered your leitmotif – your “theme song.” It can be of any style, and from any time period. Listen through this work several times without interruption.
***NOTE – you CANNOT discuss the same music you used for Paper 1.
2. At the beginning of the paper, please provide an introductory statement. In this statement, include the title and composer of the work (example: My leitmotif is “Raiders March” from Raiders of the Lost Ark, composed by John Williams).
3. Please explain why this music is your leitmotif. You may choose to reference historical, cultural, social or personal events that relate to your selection. You may write this based solely on your emotional reaction to the music. It is up to you.
Remember: If you reference any outside source, or anything that is not common knowledge, you must provide a citation for that source in your works cited.
Subtotal – approximately 200 words.
B. Analyze the music.
1. Provide a musical analysis of your leitmotif. Using the Terminological Starter, select four out of the six categories listed below, label each category, and write approximately 150 words on each. Using musical terminology, discuss which musical elements you find. Choose from the following:
Melody
Rhythm/Tempo
Harmony
Dynamics
Texture
Something else in the music you found interesting (ex: style, lyrics, instrumentation, etc.)
Subtotal – approximately 600 words
Two sections total 800 words or more.
***NOTE: You can only use “something else you find interesting” for ONE category.
2. Provide a YouTube or other web link to your music (but remember: YouTube is not the copyright holder). Please make sure the link works.
3. Provide a works cited. If you reference, directly or indirectly, any outside source, you must include that source in your citations. This includes the music you listened to. Remember: YouTube is NOT the copyright holder and not an acceptable works cited. You must cite the copyright holder.
