Presentation on Traditional Hawaiian music and honorable mention of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
Geography-Where did this music originally develop and where is can it be currently found? In some cases, music will be geographically isolated. In some instance, the music will have developed in one region of the world and spread to others. You might find that your music developed in one region but only survives in another.
How it works-Discuss to the best of your ability the various elements of music discussed in your text in chapters 2-5 and how they are used in your choice of music. You do not have to discuss all of the elements. Possible elements to discuss include: key, melody, phrases length, beat, tempo, rhythm, texture, timbre, etc. Choose elements that you are comfortable with and use descriptions that make sense to you. Don’t worry about being technical. For example, you could explain the melody as soothing or smooth or disjunct or spastic or insanely fast. A good place to start is with timbre. What instruments are used? How do they contribute to the overall sound of the music? Is there a vocalist? Is it a high voice or low voice? Smooth or rough? Etc.
Intended function-What do you think the musicians intended when they created this music? Was it for dancing? Was it to promote a cause? Was it to protest something? Was it created for worship? Was it to make money? Also, was this music intended be artistic or created simply for entertainment purposes? Maybe a little of both?
History of the Music-Provide any information that you can find about the history of the music and how it evolved. Include any outside influences in addition to developments within the chosen culture.
The PowerPoint should consist of at least 10 frames with the last being used for a listing of your sources. Please include pictures and at least two audio recordings of the music being presented. Videos are encouraged as well. If the videos chosen have audio of the music being discussed then they will count toward your audio examples.
