Paragraph 1: State which topic you have chosen and why (about 50 words).
Paragraphs 2-4: for each paragraph (about 150 words each), identify a different piece of music that is about the topic you chose (also include the YouTube link). One piece must be an example of Western Art Music; one piece must be an example of world music; one piece should be an example of popular music (of any era). Each paragraph should introduce the piece (title, performers, when written) and explain how the piece exemplifies your topic. (Please confer with me beforehand about which pieces you are choosing for each category. In the past, students have sometimes not chosen works that represent the categories of Western Art Music, World Music, or Popular Music. The definitions of these categories can be found in the textbook and my overview for Week 1: Week 1: The Big Picture (https://bgsu.instructure.com/courses/1482733/pages/week-1-the-big-picture?wrap=1)). In order to receive a passing grade, you must cite one secondary source or several sources (for example, Dr. Natvig’s textbook, Dr. Stone’s article, the documentary “Alive Inside,” my own introductions to our weekly topics, etc.) at least twice. Cite them as follows: in case of a website, put the web address in brackets behind your quote. If it’s a Youtube video, put the web address and a time stamp in brackets behind your quote. If it’s a book or article, put the last name of the author, a short version of the book or article title and a page number in brackets behind your quote, like this: (Sacks, Musicophilia, 23).
Paragraph 5: conclusion (50 words, minimum).
Please remember to submit your paper in .doc or .docx or post it directly into the assignment (“text entry”).
Other formats will not be accepted.
Your paper should be at least 550-600 words long.
