READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY
PLEASE NOTE: these are the issues the previous writer did not take care of that must be in the paper. i highlighted things that sre confusing to me or need to be changed. please take a look at the file attatched.
– focus on an excerpt of each piece; don’t just generalize on the piece as a whole. expand on the analysis (it needs to be longer). after the ANALYSIS of each piece put in your opinion on the music and be specific . the previous weiter put her opinions after some general paragraphs and that is incorrect. I am not a music major and my professor is aware of that so please do not make it too formal with too many musical terms (although there should be some– we’ve discussed Sprechstimme, tonality, in class. if you’re gonna be using them, very briefly explain them). maybe use sources explaining some musical terms.
– Use specific timestamps of the pieces and describe them
– IMPORTANT: find information on the pieces that is relevant to the Nationalist Socialist movement
– Don’t use insanely formal English; it should be formal but not to the point where it doesn’t sound like a college student wrote it
– “A survivor from Warsaw” is one of the pieces rhe previous writer used– it does not relate back to the composer’s connection to the Nazi regime— make it connect to that
– The sources are not properly sourced according to the syllabus (i believe it’s chicago style; but its listed below in the instructions so please read them carefully)
– Use more sources — like Grove dictionary; and make sure the sources used are credible!!
– If you think pieces need to be changed bc they don’t correlate to the topic, please let me know — but they should not be insanely complex. some of the pieces chosen by the previous writer are very complex
CONTENT REQUIREMENTS: All papers must include a bibliography, one of which must be The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Do not use Wikipedia as a source.
– my topic: composers and their connection to the nazi regime
– find articles relating to composers during the time period of the third Reich and their pieces
– find pieces of music that represent different opposing parties at the time and analyze them
– discuss the affiliation of the composers to the Nazi party and anything that has to do with their politics (gives you history, events going on while piece was produced)
– talk about where/when the music was played (advertisements, marches, etc)
– talk about the public’s reaction to the pieces (and music critics if there were)
– analyze the pieces in your own way (things like the mode, meter, texture, theme, instruments used, if there are any major changes in the piece)— a listening analysis
– your thoughts about the music (your opinion). The main text will be typed, double-spaced. A generalized summary of form follows:
NOTES: ALL SOURCES, NOT ONLY DIRECT QUOTATIONS, ARE TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED IN YOUR PAPER. In general, formal research papers should have a
note acknowledging its sources, unless the information is strictly your own, as in an introduction or summary. If the information in a paragraph is taken from two or more sources, each must be acknowledged (though only a single source is necessary for each idea).
When acknowledging a source of your information, cite the author’s last name and the page(s) from which the information was taken. The note should be enclosed in parentheses and should follow immediately after the sentence(s) in which the information was presented.
For example, when quoting from A Plaine and Easie Introduction to Practicall Musicke by Thomas Morley, on p 246, use the following form:
…if the bass and treble descend in tenths then must the tenor be the octave to the treble in the first of them; (Morley, 246).
Should there be more than one source by the same author in your bibliography, distinguish among the sources by including the date of publication.
DIRECT QUOTATIONS: Set off direct quotations from the text by single spacing and an indentation of five spaces from both right and left margins. Don’t rely too much on short quotations; you are better off paraphrasing them.
BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ENTRIES: Entries should be single-spaced and arranged in alphabetical order. Cite the author’s last name first, then first name (in the case of multiple authors, subsequent names should be arranged with the first name first, then last name). Include in the bibliography all works cited directly in your text. Also mention any source which has been helpful when consulted, even if it was not directly cited. Follow the following formats:
For a book:
Pestelli, Giorgio. The Age of Mozart and Beethoven, tr. Eric Cross. Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1984
For an article in a reference work found online:
Hogarth, William. “The Rake’s Progress” Grove Music Online (accessed Nov. 12, 2007)
Or in print:
Hogarth, William. “The Rake’s Progress” The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, ed. S. Sadie and J. Tyrrell (London: Macmillan, 2001), xxiii, 103-111
Italicize book titles, but use quotation marks if you are citing a section of a book. Likewise in reference to musical works, so you would write “Dirge” from Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.
DUE DATE: PAPERS ARE DUE WITHOUT EXCEPTION ON THE DATE SPECIFIED IN THE SYLLABUS. Late papers will be penalized by one letter grade per week.
