For this assignment, you can choose One of the following online concerts listed below and write a report based on the instructions.
Writing Format and Instructions: All papers must be submitted in Word format: The total word count for the entire paper should be no less than 400 words.
The following is an example of how you should structure your paper. This will a help to structure your paper and will also give you ideas as to what to write about. Most students find it helpful in organizing the paper.
This paper should be in 5 paragraphs: (150 Points Total)
Paragraph One: (10 Points)
Performer’s or ensemble’s name, date, and location
Performance Medium (such as piano recital, orchestral concert, opera, symphony concert, etc.)
Paragraph Two: (10 Points)
Composition title or titles, composer’s full name or names followed by birth and death if available. Performer or performers names.
Composition style or styles if more than one: Baroque, Classical, romantic etc.
Paragraph Three: (65 Points)
This the main part of your paper in which you talk about what you are hearing:
Pick 6 musical sections. The sections can be within one piece if it is a long piece, or it can be 6 sections divided among 3 pieces, 4 pieces etc. When referring to each section which you describe, give the time in the piece at which it occurs: ex: at 3:32 into the Chopin Ballade, this occurs; or at 2:15 seconds into the 3rd movement of the Hayden Trumpet Concerto, this occurs. This is similar to what you had on your listening assignments in the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Here are some of the things you can talk about for the areas you refer to:
Melody: What instrument or instruments are playing it? How would you describe it? Memorable, Repetitive, Erratic, etc.
Rhythm: Is it consistent and strict, is it syncopated?
Tempo: Fast, Slow, Moderate, does it vary?
Dynamics: Loud, Soft, Variable?
Performers execution: What was it that impressed you or disappointed you about the performers execution of the section you are referring to?
If there is something else which you think is relevant about the music, include it in this section. Try to be as specific as you can when talking about these sections.
Paragraph Four: (15 Points)
Describe the concert environment. Include the following:
A description of the physical layout of the performance hall or venue. Be sure to include the audience seating or standing in relation to the performers.
The clothing of the performers. Describe what people are wearing. If the men and women have slightly different clothing, note that information.
The behavior of the audience members (if visible in the video). Was this a casual outdoor concert on lawn, a grand amphitheater, etc.? Be descriptive.
Paragraph Five: (30 Points)
Write a paragraph describing your general reaction to the concert. Be sure to include:
Insight about your own experience going to concerts and whether you enjoyed your selected concert.
Would you have liked to have been a member of the audience instead of being a “virtual” viewer?
Was the concert what you expected?
What was your reaction to the music performed?
Submit your completed report by its due date. Attach it to the Assignments folder. Do not send it via e-mail to your instructor.
