For this essay, choose a song from one of the first six Beatles albums (UK versions: Please Please Me; With the Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night; Beatles for Sale; Help!; and Rubber Soul),
or one of the UK singles (these can be found on the recordings Past Masters and Mono Masters). Think about what it is you like about the song.
Next, think of another (non-Beatles) song you currently like (perhaps a song by your current favorite artist) and explore what you like about this song.
Write an essay, 3-4 double-spaced pages, comparing (and contrasting) the two songs:
the Beatles song and the non-Beatles song, demonstrating your understanding of musical elements as we have been discussing them so far in lecture and section.
You can refer to Ramona Gonzalez’s Music Analysis Guide for a list of musical/lyrical elements to consider. Think about each element in turn, but write about only the elements you consider important for your comparison.
You don’t need to consult outside sources, but if you do, remember to cite them appropriately!
