SCENARIO:
You are a newly appointed warden of a mid-level security correctional institution located in a small town in rural upstate New York. You are responsible for managing and supervising all operations within the prison as well as overseeing the recruitment, hiring, and retention of employees. You are also responsible overseeing approximately 1,500 inmates incarcerated in your correctional facility.
Unfortunately, you have inherited several problems in your new position. There are issues of prison violence among the general population. Because of this, many of the prisoner’s privileges have been taken away. Many of your staff argue that the “prisoner lockdown” punishment only exacerbates the violent behavior and creates added tension between the correctional officers and inmates.
You also have a high turnover rate amongst your staff, which in-turn places more strain on the employees who remain working in the facility. The conditions of the prison’s infrastructure are not very good. The healthcare facility is poorly staffed and under sourced, the education building (designed for inmates who want to earn their general education diploma [GED]) is falling apart, and the basic utilities in the prison itself are below the standard. Prisoners do not even have an adequate recreational space for physical fitness activities.
As a result, your job is to create 5 new policy changes that would help mitigate the problems in your prison. Use at least 5 of Samuel Walker’s 36 propositions listed in the textbook to help with these problems. You must provide an overview/description for each proposition and assess their value in making policy changes. Discuss the good probabilities, as well as the bad probabilities when implementing your policies. Based on your research and critical thought, explain to the reader how you intend to utilize Walker’s propositions in your prison as a foundational tool to enhance the New York State Department of Corrections.
Lastly, provide a summary of all decisions you have made. Clearly state your overall objective as a warden. Remember: your objective should be to mitigate the problems in your prison for both your staff and prisoners.
Most importantly: As a leader you, will not please everyone.
