After the crime is completed, it is one of the most crucial times for the investigation. The crime scene has to be secured and taped off with a log of who enters and when. All the evidence within the crime scene has to be documented and inventoried in a way as to not contaminate it. With the scene blocked off and locked down the information gathering can begin. Ensure as the investigator all necessary paperwork is obtained, such as a search warrant. If needed the investigation inside cannot begin however, the outside can be. The interviewing of witnesses can start and can start with statements or send them to an alternate location for the interview. The one in charge of the crime scene will have their team or may have to use someone from the patrol or other unit. As the one in charge starts to assign roles and tasks to individuals. The main one is the control point of the scene, allowing only individuals in that are needed. With it begin secured they can start with the investigation and evidence collection. The investigator has to determine what searching method they will use strip, spiral, zone, grid, or pie.
When the procedures before the investigation are completed, they can move forward with the process. The crime scene must be preserved to obtain evidence. The evidence must be photographed in its location. Then inventoried with the serial number if present. Also, if doing a scan on the scene then can mark the spot while the collection is ongoing. All aspects of the crime must be documented, photo, and preserved to be placed into evidence for future reference or part of the case. In terms of a dead body at the scene after securing it. If able to establish if the person is dead or not move to the next procedure. Not all departments allow officers to make that determination only EMS does. Then contact the chain of command, then the coroner or medical examiner.
