TREATING EMPLOYEES WITH LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING
The Physicians Billing Unit at Foote Hospital have a great responsibility. This unit maintains and ensures that billing is completed properly. The Physicians Billing Unit employees do not take these responsibilities lightly. The employees look at the rolls and responsibilities as taking the best care of the patients seen at Foote Hospital. Although, the unit does not have direct care with the patients the unit is responsible to ensure that the insurance companies handle every bit of the insurance company’s responsibilities when the claims are submitted. The employees in the Physicians Billing Unit understand the struggles of everyday Americans and how important it is that the billing is taken care of appropriately.
The Physicians Billing Unit at Foote Hospital is led by a caring leader named Sarah. Sarah’s background has led her to the manager she is today. Having started a career in the Nursing school, Sara learned the struggles of everyday people who are patients and the workers that serve them. Unlike many other workplace environments, Sarah approaches each worker and issue differently. Sarah commonly tells other leaders when lending advice, “Don’t let the slackers slack. Work with them from the second you notice them slacking. Motivate them to improve or encourage them to move on.” This quote when taken out of context may appear harsh or insensitive. Sarah is a hands-on manager. When an employee needs coaching or training Sarah is aware and available to assist. Not only work issues are addressed, but Sarah also cares about the employees in their personal lives and does not shy away to try and help when needed. Sarah does this as a leader, but the entire department also follows suit. Following Sarah’s example has spread to the entire team. The team operates as a family, loving one another and being supportive of each other’s needs.
There are seven lessons that can be learned from Sarah’s “Values-based leadership in practices”. The first practice is identity practices which is showing ways Sarah uses her knowledge and experience to help the team accomplish work. The second practice is engagement which is reinforcing involvement with successes failures, or goals of the group. The third leadership practice is participation which allows the entire team to be involved in decisions including the interview process. The fourth practice is practicing humanity. The humanity aspect focuses on acknowledging the wants, needs, foibles, and dreams of each of the employees within the department. The fifth practice is referred to as the practice of life which is Sarah recognizing that life and work must be able to be separate. Sarah also realizes at times work and personal life do affect the employees and can affect the performance. The sixth leadership practice is the practice of meaning. The leader of the department sees the links between employees’ daily activity and the mission of the department or organization. The seventh and final practice is the practice of play. The workplace is serious work, but this does not mean that the workplace can not be a playful place at time between jokes and breaks to break up the monotony.
