Being able to differentiate, navigate, and instruct accompanying the many different types of scientific papers is vital for a science teacher. Attached in this week’s module are three excerpts that will help you map out the appropriate text for your future classroom. Literature reviews are commonly used as a tool for research among science instructors. Literature reviews are not typically assigned, however, until high school- maybe as early as middle school. The last excerpt, “Applying the writing process in an upper elementary classroom,” gives elementary teachers strategies to incorporate in the classroom that will prepare students to become better writers for their future literature reviews. First, students will begin to reword text (like below), and will hopefully, in time, develop their own writing styles and ideas. In, “Applying the writing process in an upper elementary classroom,” Example 2 allows a student the opportunity to break down and reword text from Rosie’s Walk. For this week, create a similar exercise for your science students. First, choose a MS CCRS. Next, find reputable text from a scientific article or textbook. Choose 3-5 sentences from the text. Include the original text taken directly from the literature (make sure to save the reference). Then create a “frame” similar to Example 2. Finally, create an example key with a possible student’s answer. A science example is given below. Do not use my framework or example.
