A six- to seven-page argumentative paper. All papers must be double-spaced,
12 point font. Your paper should include references and all references that are used must be
properly cited.
Your assignment is as follows: (1) Select one of the articlesY
(you may also use the articles by Miller
and Kukathas on Immigration.)
While you do not need to summarize
the entire article, you should explain and evaluate its
main thesis and some of its supporting lines
of analysis and argumentation. (2) Build your
paper around a thesis statement that you develop
and defend. Your thesis should be about
one of the main issues or ideas from the article and/or the author’s treatment of this
issue/idea. The thesis should also reflect your evaluation of the
author’s main conclusions.
(3) As part of your analysis, you must make a meaningful connection
to at least one of the
texts that we have studied in class. You might consider using one author to
challenge or
criticize another, or to provide additional support for the claims of the other.
Remember that the claims and arguments that you present in your paper are not equivalent
to
mere “opinions.” These claims and arguments should be based on analysis, reasons,
inferences,
evidence, analogies, examples and counterexamples, and so on. Constructing
and defending a
thesis along with its supporting arguments and interpretative claims
requires that you pay close
attention to the ideas being presented by the author, and that
you also evaluate and comment on
these ideas in an insightful manner. Furthermore, while
political science and the other social
sciences are highly relevant to many of the issues
under consideration in the course, ours is
primarily a course in political philosophy. So your
term paper should have a philosophical focus– it should engage in the explanation,
construction, and/or evaluation of normative arguments based on a careful reading of the
texts under investigation
