There are six steps required to complete this project.
Visit your topic’s page to view the three required sources and the research question you will aim to investigate.
Familiarize yourself with the typical format and requirements for an Annotated Bibliography.
Produce APA Style citations for your three required sources.
Carefully read your sources, and take note of information that helps you answer your topic’s research question.
Write 5-7 sentence long annotations for each of your three required sources.
Review, edit, proofread, and submit your completed assignment in Brightspace before the due date.

Step 1: Select a topic and view the three required sources and the research question you will aim to investigate.
Select a sociological topic on the Choose Your Final Project Topic (2 Options) page. For this assignment, you will use the three academic sources listed there.  The research question listed on your topic page will guide all of your inquiry into those sources.
You will use the provided research question and the provided sources for the Annotated Bibliography.  The use of any other sources will receive no credit.  The provided sources have been curated specifically with answering the research question in mind.
Once you have selected a topic, you may continue on to step two.|
Step 2: Carefully read your sources, and take note of information that helps you answer your topic’s research question.
With your three credible sources in hand, and your citations created, now you should read read the sources and understand their major contributions to the academic understanding of your project topic.  This step will help you understand the readings and prepare you to write your annotations.  Keep in mind that you should NOT read each source from front to back.  Instead, you should read strategically with the following question in mind:
What kinds of information, context, theories, concepts, and/or findings from this source will help me answer my research question?
In your writing, you need to assess strengths and weaknesses, outline the author’s main arguments, and describe how this source is relevant to your own topic.  Use the videos below to help you learn more about how you should be reading each of the major resource types you may be using in this project:
Step 3: Write 5-7 sentence long annotations for each of your three required sources.
For this assignment you need to produce annotations that are between 5 and 7 sentences for each source.  To get started preparing to write, watch the following video and/or read the text provided below to learn more about the appropriate kinds of writing you need to include in your annotations.  Remember, your goal for reading was to reflect on the ways that each source helped your answer your research question.  That is also the main goal for writing the annotations. 
Use the question prompts below as a general guide when writing annotations.  You need 5-7 sentences total:
• 2 to 4 sentences to summarize the main idea(s) of the source.
– What are the main arguments?
– What is the point of this book/article?
– What topics are covered?
• 1 or 2 sentences to assess and evaluate the source.
– How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography?
– Is this information reliable? current?
– Is the author credible? have the background to write on this topic?
– Is the source objective or biased?
• 1 or 2 sentences to reflect on the source.
– Was this source helpful to you?
– How can you use this source for your research project?
– Has it changed how you think about your topic? (source)
Each annotation must be between five and seven sentences in length—no more and no less.  Each annotation must be written in your own words.  Direct quotations of any kind are NOT allowed for this assignment and will receive no credit.  Instead, you should paraphrase as applicable.  The Online Writing Lab at Purdue University contains helpful information for how to paraphrase without plagiarizing.  You do not need to include parenthetical or in-text citations.  For this assignment it is understood that any paraphrased information comes from the source you are annotating and page numbers are not necessary.
Stop!  You’re not done yet!  Before you submit, take some time to finalize your annotated bibliography prior to submitting.
Step 4: Review, edit, proofread, and submit your completed assignment in Brightspace before the due date.
Reviewing, Editing, and Proofreading (in that order!)
Once you have prepared citations and annotations for all three sources, it is very important that you review, proofread, and edit.  Use the questions below to help you complete these steps.  Review information above in the instructions for further information about sources and requirements.
Reviewing
Review the document as a whole to ensure you have met the general requirements.
Did you produce APA citations and annotations for the three credible sources listed in your final project topic option?
Did you include exactly five to seven sentences for each annotation?
Did you paraphrase effectively without plagiarizing?
Did you prepare an APA citation for the appropriate type of resource?  There are specific citation styles for books or ebooks and scholarly research articles in academic journals.
Are your sources listed in alphabetical order?
Did you update the information on the APA Bibliography title page to reflect your project title, name, etc.?
Do your citations have appropriate hanging indents for second or third lines when necessary?
Editing
Editing is the process of changing or updating your writing to ensure your sentences are clear, well-reasoned, and accurately state what you intended.
Are your annotations free of run-on sentences?
Do you accurately describe the main points of the source using college-level writing?
Are your annotations easy to read?
Do your annotations thoughtfully assess each source and describe how it helps you answer your research question?
Would your annotations be more clear if you rewrote or moved some sentences around within the annotation to increase clarity?
Proofreading
Proofreading is about the nitty gritty process of checking your writing for mastery of written English.
Did you properly capitalize each sentence and any proper nouns in your annotations?
Do you properly use punctuation marks including commas and apostrophes?
Did you check to ensure that each sentence has all the words it needs (no missing words)?
Did you check that each word (including author names) is spelled correctly?
Is each annotation written using present tense throughout?

Topic Option 1: Food and College Students
Research Question: What social factors cause food insecurity among college students, and how might we solve them?
For this research question, you will explore the social and political structures surrounding food.  Although food consumption may be considered an isolated preference, research in the sociology of food demonstrates how each of us are embedded within a much larger framework of food systems.  The most meaningful system at work may be capitalism, since our world treats food as a commodity that is purchased. Other interwoven issues surround questions of food access and availability, food security or insecurity, and poverty.
Use the eBook and two scholarly research articles below to help you answer the research question.  The book by Hossfeld et al. provides a broad overview of the linkages between food insecurity, governmental programs, and poverty in our social structure.  The two scholarly research articles have a narrower focus and delve into the experiences of food insecurity specifically among college or university students.
