For this assignment you will find
and view a recording of a live performance online (around 20-30 minutes in
length) and then relate your listening and viewing experience to the themes we
have discussed so far in the course. You can select any musical genre,
tradition, or artist for this assignment. I’d love if you chose something you
are unfamiliar with though perhaps curious to learn more about, but you are not
necessarily required to do so.
Your report should be at least 500
words (not including your name, title of your paper, date, etc…), and reflect
on the key terms, themes, and ideas that we have discussed so far in the class,
including:

Name
of group or artist.

Date
and place of event.
–
Description
of the sonic activity or music: instruments, key sonic characteristics, other
important features you hear, etc…

Context
of event: what did you observe? Was it a concert of popular music? Was it
formal/informal? Who attended? Who performed? Where was it? What was the
trajectory of the performance? How many songs? Was there audience interaction? What
were some of the notable the visual/physical elements? etc…
–
Discussion
on the use and function, or meaning, of the performance. Think about the
exercise in our first class and think about what the performance “is
giving,” and also expand on that by trying to express, in your opinion, why
and how is it “giving” that?

Explore
some of the social connections that this performance, this musical scene, and
the people involved may have?

Provide
some background on the genre, performer(s), or any other relevant context. You
may want to consult an outside resource for this if it is not provided in a
description of the event.

Proofread
your assignment: double check your spelling, grammar, style, and format.
