This assignment is meant to test your active listening skills by asking you to analyze a performance in the video provided. The music being performed in the video will be unfamiliar as it will not have been covered in the course yet, or at all.
You are not expected to correctly guess the type of music, but rather, are expected to “show your work” in written form as you analyze the music. You will document your entire analysis process, taking into consideration musical and socio-cultural phenomena you see and hear in the video. You will be evaluated based on how you use pertinent musical terminology (e.g., heterophony, homophony, etc.), apply material covered in lecture and in readings, and your ability to recognize musical phenomena and connect those to the cultures we’ve covered in the course. You will then supplement your analysis with scholarly research, which you will use to support your analysis and evaluation of the performance.
Your analysis will culminate with:
A guess of where in the world this music is being performed and why.
A guess of what type of music is being performed (i.e., the genre) and why.
Once again: You will not be expected to “guess correctly”; You will be expected to analyze as best you can, using your active listening skills, and understanding of music within cultural contexts developed thus far in the course. Remember that you are expected to credible sources (i.e., peer-reviewed journal articles, books, interviews, etc.) and cite them to support your analysis.
Listen to the provided video and write a response, wherein you guess the genre of music being played, where in the world it is being played, and your analysis.
You should address the following questions:
What is the musical texture present in this performance?
What are some of the instruments being played in this video?
What languages do I hear being sung/spoken?
Where in the world do I think this is being played? Why?
What genre of music do I think this is?
Be sure to assess:
Musical textures
Musical Instruments
Venue and Audience demographics (if applicable)
Rhythmic Characteristics
Harmonic characteristics
Requirements and formatting for your paper:
Submitted as a PDF.
Is written in MLA format (in-text citations) with a corresponding Works Cited page (as a separate page at the end of your paper).
Must utilize at least 10 sources.
Must be no less than 1,500, but no more than 2,500 words.
Has your name and student ID at the top left of the first page.
Make sure to address all of the questions given above and document your thought process as thoroughly as possible. Approach the video as if you were a detective, trying to figure out the genre given the clues that you can see in the video. You’ll use all of the musical terminology and cultural topics we’ve covered in this course to do this completely. Be sure to support your analysis with scholarly research.
