ENG 2D1 Lord of the Flies Essay Assignment/ Outline
Choose a title that directly reflects and communicates something important about your thesis and write it here. Lord of the Flies Essay is not an appropriate title.
This essay will consist of five paragraphs including an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. For this essay you will need to develop a thesis, a main argument or statement about the topic given to you. You will first begin this assignment by brainstorming and planning your thesis, subordinate / supporting arguments and evidence by completing the “Lord of the Flies Essay Planner.” Here, you will brainstorm / plan three subordinate arguments that will form the basis as well as the guiding three topic sentences for your three body paragraphs. For each of these three subordinate arguments, you will brainstorm a minimum of three quality quotations (giving page numbers). You will only use two quotations for each of your three body paragraphs. Once you have completed the essay planner, please complete the outline found in this essay package.
Please observe the following formal language conventions and other instructions for this formal literary essay:
1.  Do not use contractions.  For example, use “do not”, rather than “don’t”; “cannot”, rather than “can’t”, etc.
2.  Use Canadian spelling rather than American spelling.  For example, use “flavour” rather than “flavor”, or “neighbour” rather than “neighbor”, or “centre” rather than “center”, etc.
3.  Use formal language only.  Do not use jargon or slang or any kind of profanity whatsoever.  Do not use expressions such as “guy”, “kid”–to refer to a child, “a lot”,  “mad” instead of angry, etc. Also, please do not use cliches nor any informal language–time-worn expressions that are over-used in every-day speech. Some examples of informal language: “Jack becomes angry with Ralph’s dogmatic adherence
Stenkbaum 2
to rules and snaps on him, (or loses it).” “Piggy reveres Ralph’s judicious ordering of priorities for the boys on the island and stays loyal to him through thick and thin.”
4.  Indent each paragraph–either hit the tab button, or indent five spaces.
5.  Do not use first person nor any personal pronouns…i.e., no “I”, “me”, “we” “you”, etc.  Use third person only. Never directly address the reader.
6.  Write in present tense consistently throughout–e.g., “Piggy is [present tense] devalued due to his perceived physical deficiencies by the majority of the boys,” rather than “Piggy was [past tense] devalued…”
7.  Always directly and effectively introduce and integrate quotations.  Never refer to a quotation in the following awkward manner:  e.g., ‘This quote / quotation shows’, or ‘As seen in this quote / quotation,’ ….etc. Find a more sophisticated way to explain and analyze quoted text.  Always give page references in brackets immediately following the quoted words–e.g., (45), or if the words run from the bottom of one page to the top of the next–(45-46). For your very first quotation and citation, give the author’s last name, e.g. (Golding 15). Since you are only quoting from one source, only page references are needed for your remaining citations.
8.  Please note that the above rules regarding formal writing conventions do not apply to quotations. Quote the words as you find them in the text regardless of their use of contractions, slang, cliches, etc. Should you need to substitute any words in the quotation to make the meaning more clear within the context of your writing, you may use [square brackets] to indicate the needed changes. For example, the quotation may make use of the pronoun “he”, but to make the meaning more clear, the proper name “Ralph” might be better suited to your purpose.
9.  When indicating novel and play titles use italics. Do not use quotation marks. For titles of essays, articles, short stories, poems, etc., use double quotation marks only. Thus, by following MLA for this essay, any reference to the novel is shown as: Lord of the Flies.
10. Number your pages as per MLA: page numbers should be placed on the top right corner, introduced by your last name. Start with your first page of essay text–for example, Stenkbaum 1, etc. as modeled throughout this package. Do not use headers.

Submit your essay in this order:
1.  Good copy of essay (double spaced) including your Works Cited as your last numbered page;
2.   “Lord of the Flies Essay Planner”;
3.  Outline package;
4.  Carefully edited and revised (double-spaced) rough draft(s). Minimum of two peer editor names required with evidence of peer editing. This must be done on your own time. Please plan for this.
Important Due Date:
Electronic submission to turnitin.com for plagiarism checking, and to Google Classroom for evaluation by 8 a.m., Tuesday, April 30, 2024. (Only a copy of your good copy is to be submitted to turnitin.com)
Please note: The next page of this package gives you the actual Works Cited page for your essay. Replicate it exactly as shown; only change the upper right-hand corner name of Stenkbaum to your last name, and the page number is to reflect the very last page number of the good copy of your essay. For example, if your essay’s good copy is four pages, your Works Cited page goes next, numbered Stenkbaum 5 in the upper right-hand corner. A Works Cited page always gets its own separate page(s). Please note the novel title is shown in italics. After the next Works Cited page, please note the following 5 pages of essay outline: each outline page reflects ONE PARAGRAPH in your essay. DO NOT MIMIC THE MANY CHUNKS IN THE OUTLINE AND WRITE 25 PARAGRAPHS, PLEASE. (This essay is to be 5 paragraphs).

ENG 2D Lord of the Flies Essay Planner
Please complete this brainstorming / planning package; it is an important part of your essay work.
You may use one of the thesis statements provided, or have a thesis statement approved by your instructor. You may consider modifying or using part of one of the thesis statements provided. An antithesis is optional, and may be built into your thesis statement.
In this planner, you will plan for your thesis (main argument) / antithesis, and three subordinate / supporting arguments. Your thesis and three subordinate / supporting arguments should be universal for this essay. (Do not directly mention elements, characters, or identifying features of the novel.)
In this planner, you will plan for 3 quotations for each of your 3 body paragraphs, but choose your 2 best for each body paragraph.
You should reference using MLA referencing for all quotations; you may cite fully once, for your first quotation, and then just give page numbers since you are only citing from one apparent source–e.g., first quotation citation: (Golding 33), and then subsequently, (33).
Sample thesis statements:
Despite society’s strong efforts to civilise and domesticate, humans are inherently capable of savagery and evil.
Humans are complex creatures and thus capable of both heroic, selfless compassion, and darkly motivated evil.
People possessing a clear moral code are more capable of maintaining an individual sense of identity, but may suffer severe consequences socially.
My own thesis: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Teacher approved on this date: ______________________________
