1. What is the difference between Saharan Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa? What does the conventional designation of “sub-Saharan” refer to?
2. What are some of the specific countries that comprise these respective regions? *Don’t forget to look at the power point on West African musics that is included in this module.
3. Who are the Akan? What region or country are they associated with?
4. What is the Ivory Coast? What countries are associated with this region?
5. In doing any reading about West Africa you will see references to Mande people (and language), the Manding language (and people), and the Mandinka (ethnic group). What is the difference (if any) between Mande, Manding, and Mandinka?
