Scenario:
You’ve been working with The Daily Register, a regional newspaper, for the last 12 months in the HR department. One of the sales managers, Andrea Johnson, has submitted the paperwork for terminating one of his employees. The sales dept is responsible for soliciting and securing advertisers for the newspaper. Andrea maintains that Jeanette Landis has failed to reach sales goals for the last 6 months despite numerous attempts at discipline and remediation. Furthermore, Jeanette has threatened to file a lawsuit if the Daily Register terminates her employment. The HR manager has requested that you perform an investigation into Jeanette’s performance to determine whether she should in fact be terminated. The documents sent by Andrea, documents that you’ve received in HR, Jeanette’s job descriiption, and the company’s policy appear in Exhibits 1-6 (ATTACHMENT) In the separate spreadsheet, you will find performance appraisal and sales data from other employees.
Objective: Assess how you would approach effectively terminating an employee due to poor performance.
Task: Write a one-page descriiption of how you would hold a termination meeting with the employee (assume the employee is fired for poor performance, regardless of the decision you actually made in the Disciplinary Action Part 3, see attached). The response should be written as a narrative, explaining the process in detail.
The descriiption should describe, but is not limited to:
– How and where you would set up the meeting.
– What you would say to the employee and how you would say it.
– What points would you cover with the employee.
– How the employee might react and how you would deal with these potential reactions.
