Readings: Two Chapters from Kate McQuistion’s We’ll Meet Again: Musical Design in the Films of Stanley Kubrick – available in Readings in Files tab. You can choose to read only the relevant material on the scenes you wish to discuss.
For your midterm assignment you will compare TWO scenes:

In EACH movie choose ONE scene where the music is taken from a pre-existing music by a classical composer (Strauss, Ligeti, Bartok and others). Your assignment is to compare how Kubrick used classical music in the TWO scenes you chose (one from each film).

Your response should be structured in the following way:
Describe each scene you chose from each film – provide the exact spotting(timing) of the scene, description of the scene and its relation to the plot.

What is the classical music used in each scene? in a short paragraph provide information about the classical composer and the specific piece of music used in each scene – when was it written, what is the instrumentation? what ensemble is playing? Listen to the entire piece without watching the scene to get familiar with the music on its own.

Compare the effect of the music between the two scenes (two different films): What functions does the music serve in the scene? What is the difference in the effect of the music in the scenes?

Is there any impact to the fact that the music is a pre existing classical piece? Use references from Kate McQuiston’s texts along your own commentary.

How well in your opinion does the music fit the scene and why?

You response should be between 250-500 words ONLY! – no more, no less – you will be graded on that.

Please write in clear separated paragraphs and NOT in one big text.
