Zahra, 31, was raised by a “helicopter” mother who was always overly involved in her life. Her father was the exact opposite—a functional alcoholic who always struggled to be connected with the family. He spent hours locked away in his office. She never witnessed a healthy connection between her parents. Her connection with her mom was based on her mom getting her own needs being met. Zahra fulfilled her moms own need to be loved, wanted, and valued.
When Zahra meets Jeff the attraction is immediate. Jeff works in sales and is highly charismatic. He’s going through a divorce and tells Zahra all about the issues he’s having with his wife. He blames her for the divorce, for the way the marriage went, + for wanting to stay in the home they owned together. The more he tells these stories, the deeper the attraction grows for Zahra. She sees him telling her these things as a level of emotional intimacy (something she has never gotten from a man) + instantly goes into caretaking mode. Jeff feels loved by this caretaking + they begin a “whirlwind relationship.”
A few months into dating, Jeff starts disappearing. He isn’t where he says he is. He doesn’t return calls. He misses important events. Zahra has learned to be attracted to inconsistency because it was modeled by father. To her, this is a sign to try harder to win the love she never got as a child. Jeff is gambling when he disappears. Zahra begs Jeff to get help. She begs him to go into therapy. He isn’t interested + distracts or changes the subject. He starts telling Zahra how expensive the divorce is getting + that he can’t afford his rent. Rather than viewing Jeff’s irresponsible behavior as a red flag, she sees this as an opportunity for him to move in with her. He jumps on this because his lease is coming up and it’s one less expense — but for Zahra, it’s proof that he is choosing her.
Nothing changes when he moves in. Jeff continues to disappear. Zahra pleads for him to change (like his mother used to.) Even with his behavior, she pressures him to marry her because this is what she expects and can predict from men. She knows this role well self healers.
