Alternatives to incarceration, also known as intermediate sanctions, are types of special probation that combine treatment with a higher level of surveillance and more restrictive conditions than traditional probation. This is particularly important for juvenile offenders. With enhanced supervision, intermediate sanctions are designed for more serious cases at higher risk of reoffending than typical probationers. They are designed for those who would not be eligible for traditional probation due to the seriousness of their behavior or other factors. Alternative sentences typically entail at least one rehabilitative component.
To maximize the likelihood of success, the various types of alternatives to incarceration are targeted for juvenile offenders with specific characteristics and circumstances. Below is a list of various intermediate sanctions. Provide a hypothetical scenario for each that could lead to the successful rehabilitation of a juvenile offender. Each scenario should include the juvenile’s criminal background, the type of crime committed, the reason for the intermediate sanction, the type of supervision and rehabilitation required, and any other restrictions. You will need to include additional research to support your position.
