Your post that starts a discussion thread should be about 1 paragraphs in-length

April 20, 2024

Your post that starts a discussion thread should be about 1 paragraphs in-length and discuss what you found to be the most interesting, relatable, important, confusing, or complicated concept/theory or psychological research finding that you read viewed in the TED Talk video by Dr. Frans de Waal about “Moral Behaviors in Animals” (in files)
relevant & specific lesson slide number(s) &/or textbook page number(s) -so that the class may have them for easy reference [Note: I go by the actual textbook page numbers, not the pdf page numbers. It’s ok to use either, just indicate which you are using]
a specific title that makes it clear to the class what your main thought-provoking point or question for the class to ponder is (i.e., do not give your posts broad, general titles, such as “Social Psychology” etc.)
a clear explanation for why/how you think the specific course concept/research finding relates to logically relevant, detailed examples from your personal life-experiences, examples from the real-world/current news events, other concepts/topics in our coursework, things you have learned from other classes, and/or other relevant psychological research findings that you found, etc.

a. The Stanford Prison experiment (Lesson 12, slide 5) was created by Dr.Phillip Zimbardo to study the effects of prison life and their correlation with powerful figures between Prison guards and inmates. Dr.Zimbardo gathered 24 volunteers, and altered the environment of the Stanford Psychology department into a prison, and would flip a coin to separate the volunteers into prison guards and inmates.  The guards of the Stanford Prison experiment were encouraged by Dr.Phillip Zimbardo to create their own rules, and continue to mess with the “inmates” in any way whether it was physically by making them do physical torture such as push-ups or mental torture by taking away the toilets and forcing the prisoners to use a bucket. The most important concept to take away from Dr.Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment was that a role of authority being given to a good person can make them evil and sadistic toward society. This claim is interesting because the researcher being Dr.Zimbardo was also part of the experiment since he viewed himself as the warden of the prison. This type of experiment featuring authority roles was repeated in the future and found that the prison guards of the experiment were never as violent as the prison guards from the Stanford prison experiment such as the infamous prison guard “John Wayne”. I believe that Dr.Zimbardo was a confounding variable in his own experiment since he encouraged his prison guards to be as violent and ruthless to the prisoners which would have caused the participants to commit any acts since they would feel that it would be for “research purposes”. Although it is possible that a person given an authority role in society could shift the behavior of a person, I do not think it is possible that it would force an individual to become violent to society. This can be seen with political figures of the world such as political figures all over the world, or even bosses or owners of companies.

b.In one of our most recent chapters, Lesson 7 – Intelligence, we go over what defines the word intelligence and how we measure it. In one of the slides, they talk about Psychologist Howard Gardner’s theory on 9 Intelligences, which explains there are several types of different “intelligence” and each person is proficient in different ones. Logical/Mathematical Intelligence demonstrates the ability to work well in problem solving and mathematical equations. Linguistic Intelligence demonstrates the ability to comprehend the use of words and languages. Bodily-Kinesthetic demonstrates the ability to use ones body movements or hand eye coordination. Interpersonal Intelligence demonstrates the ability to understand emotions from other people and intrapersonal intelligence demonstrates the ability to understand emotions from ones self. Spatial Intelligence defines the ability to visualize 3d objects. His 8th intelligence is musical, which demonstrates the ability to comprehend music and rhythm. Over the years other psychologists and scientists have added onto his theory and introduced the 9th intelligence, which is called Existential/Spiritual. This defines the ability to understand the meaning of life and death.
The reason I chose this video, is because I agree that people can be smart or intelligent in different ways other than in the logical sense, like mathematics. For example myself I would consider more intelligent in the logical or kinesthetics as I’m better at understand math and played sports in high school, rather than music as I don’t know how to play an instrument. Even though I may smarter than some people in those fields, other people may be smarter than me in other types of intelligences. My mom works in customer services, and can speak 3 different languages (English, Spanish, Korean). Even though I’m better than her in math, she is way better at talking to people in a linguistic and interpersonal settings.  Young Sheldon is a good example, although he is a mathematical/scientific genius, he fails to understand certain social cues or interpersonal intelligence. I don’t think intelligence is defined on how someone is good at school, rather on the different types of fields they excel at. I feel that schools should start catering more towards peoples intelligences, for example more high schools that are focused on engineering, being a musician/dancer, trade, etc.
