For this Literature Analysis, you will analyze one Russian novel published since the mid-nineteenth century as a historical document. In other words, rather than writing about its literary form or qualities, you’ll write about it as a primary source that provides insight into the time and place it was produced.
There are many ways to approach literature as a historical source, but some questions you might consider: Who is the author and want can their biography tell us about the time and place they came from? How is your novel a reflection of the time and place of its production? How might your novel have influenced its historical context, e.g., how might your novel have changed how readers saw or acted in the world?
Your analysis ought to be between 1000 and 1500 words. It should have a clear thesis statement that makes a historical argument about your novel. It should draw specific evidence from the novel to support that thesis. Additionally, it should draw from and cite two sources other than the novel. Ideally those sources will be critical commentaries on the novel, or historical framings of the novel. Academic sources (i.e., monographs or journal articles) are preferable to popular sources, like commercial websites.
