Your assignment for the research paper is to compose an argument essay, supported by research. Develop a topic that stems from our discussions of the readings and write a paper that takes a position on a topic of appropriate scope for an 8-10 page paper. Your paper should contribute something original to the existing discourse on the topic and resonate with an audience of today.
CHOOSING A TOPIC:
Try to avoid common topics such as abortion, gun-control, legalizing drugs, etc. These topics are often too broad and have been debated to the point where it is very difficult to find anything original to say. Instead, think about the concerns of the authors we have read and how their concerns might be relevant today. For example, if you liked the Orwell essay, you could write about how technology, such as autocorrect or AI, is affecting the connection between writing and thinking. Or if you liked Machiavelli, you could write about how leaders today–even business leaders–could learn from his ideas. Another possibility is to discuss whether his ideas would work today, and so on. If you liked Martin Luther King, you could discuss the effectiveness of protest practices today or compare them to what King says in his letter.
Whatever you choose to write about, your essay should be focused, supported with specific details and examples, organized, and well-written.
Keeping in mind what you have learned about argument, defend your thesis using an appropriate combination of rhetorical strategies (without appearing biased, untrustworthy, or uninformed). Also consider including a counterargument at some point in the essay. There is no specific requirement for the number of sources you cite, but remember that the sources you use should indicate a broad familiarity with the topic, and your use of research should be adequate and convincing. Support your argument with analysis of the evidence from your research, organize the paper logically and coherently, and document your sources properly, both in the text and in a works cited page, using MLA format.
