You will write a four-page paper (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and
12-point font). It is
important to be a critical consumer of
research. Research reports can sometimes be misleading because authors “cherry
pick” the findings to report (“Sub-group analysis”) and certain other things to
get an article accepted. You will find one scholarly article describing a study
done by a clinical or counseling psychologist or a psychologist doing
clinically-relevant research, that has also been reported on in the popular
press. You will read both the popular article that describes the findings from
the journal article, AND the actual journal article. You will write a
paper that critically evaluates this popular report compared to the scholarly
article. Questions might include What did the popular article get right? What
did it get wrong? Was the popular article well-written and clear? Why or why
not? Did the popular article convey the main points of the research article?
How would you make the popular article better? The term paper should use APA style
formatting, which among other things includes: Body – 4-5 pages (not including cover and reference pages), At
least 3 headings of your choice are required; however, you may include more
headings if you prefer. Less than 3 headings will result in a deduction of 2
points per missing heading. Points
will be deducted for papers less than 4 full pages (5 points per full page, 3 points
per half page, 2 points per quarter page). Points will also be deducted for
“creative” (NON-APA STYLE) margins, spacing, etc. BE SURE TO PROPERLY CITE PARAPHRASED INFORMATION AND DIRECT QUOTES
in the BODY OF THE PAPER. This paper requires a minimum of 5 references. One reference must be the textbook (Clinical Psychology by Andrew M.
Pomerantz) and two references must be a peer-reviewed journal article. The
other references may be books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and/or other reputable
sources. Please be cautious when using online resources, as many are not
reviewed for accuracy, and are NOT “reputable sources” One site you that you MAY
NOT USE as a reference is Wikipedia; use
of this website will result in a deduction of a minimum of 5 points. All
books, articles, websites, and other references must be properly listed on the
reference page and cited within the body of your paper. Failure to list
a citation on the reference page or cite a reference within the body of your
paper will result in a deduction of a minimum of 2 points for each oversight. The paper should be in 12-point Times New Roman
font, with standard 1-inch margins, and formatted in formal APA style. Refer
to the Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association. regarding proper formatting for a literature
search paper. YOUR WRITTEN WORK WILL BE
