F‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍amily Education Group Project (100 points) The family education project consists of the development of an education program for a specific audience on a specific family issue. The purpose of the project is two fold. First, you will expand your knowledge base about family education. Second, you will learn how to package and present this information professionally through teaching a group session. The project is broken into two major sections (introduction and teaching units). The first major part of the group project assignment is the introduction. The introduction serves to present the basic literature review of your topic, the format of your program, and the general theory selected to guide your project. In this section, the group will review theory, research, etc. to present the framework for your program (i.e., justify the need for it). You will identify the target audience and explain why this program is appropriate for the selected group (i.e., why is this information needed by this particular group of parents). The second part of your project will consist of two related teaching units with a specific goal and at least ONE objective for each goal. You will develop a unit of a family education program on a specific topic of interest within the overall program. For example, a program could be designed for first time parents of toddlers with Asperger’s Disorder. Drawing from what we know from research and theory (as well as practical experience), you could develop units from any of the following areas: toilet learning, eating with utensils, sle‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍eping in my own bed, getting to bed without a struggle, encouraging nutritious eating habits, separation from parents, adjusting to preschool, typical language development, getting along with peers, playing is learning, understanding emotions, etc. Each unit will have a specific theme, specific objectives, activities, handouts, etc. everything a person needs to actually present this program unit to parents and professionals. As always, it is important to attempt to get the most recent information possible on the topic you select. Because our knowledge base is continually expanding, information about some topics gets outdated quickly. The reference section must include a MINIMUM of 4 peer-reviewed resources. Non-peer reviewed resources are NOT acceptable for this report. Teaching a Family Education Group Session In week 16 you will present your project through teaching a group session online consisting of your classmates. To do this you will create a PowerPoint presentation of your project. The session may include relevant information from the introduction, your teaching units, target audience, and other important information about your topic. Also, be sure to include your peer-reviewed resources at the end of the presentation. The purpose is to present your program to families in a creative manner. To make this more like a group session, be sure to read and respond to at least 2 of your classmates presentations and also answer all questions asked to you about your presentation.
