You will conduct a virtual ethnographic interview with an individual who is distinctive from your cultural background in at least three major ways. Ideally, you’ll find someone of a different spiritual background from you, which might even make you feel at least somewhat uncomfortable. For example, if you are a Latina Catholic married female without kids, you might choose a Black or Asian single, Buddhist or Muslim male who is a father. ( FOR REFERENCE I am a Latina female, catholic, and have no children) You would discuss how your race and ethnicity, spirituality, marital status, gender, and/or parental status could impact your working relationship with this individual as a client.
The focus of the interview will be on the interviewee’s culture, values, background, etc. It would be helpful in writing your paper if you seek permission to record the conversation so you can refer back to it for clarification. Please keep in mind, that this assignment will focus on how the distinctiveness may impact your professional relationship with this person if they were a client.
Advise the interviewee that you are a social work student, and you are expected to work with people whose backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, etc., are distinct from your own. Also, advise them that their names will remain confidential.
You will develop a set of questions to guide your interview. The aim of the interview is to gather information to be able to answer the questions below. How you do this is up to you. In the paper you will describe what you learned from the interviewee, and equally important, what you learned about yourself, and how you deal with distinctiveness.
You will turn in a 4-5-page paper answering the following questions and using the following headings:
Positionality of Interviewee
Describe the person; based on the concept of intersectionality, what can you share about their identity?
Impact of Economic, Social and Political Realities
How have economic, social, and political realities impacted them? For example, how may they have experienced discrimination, oppression or privilege as a result of membership in their various identity groups?
Strengths and Resiliencies
What strengths and resiliencies do you recognize in this person?
Connections to Your Own Identities and Experiences
How distinct or similar are their values, beliefs, culture, etc. from your own?
Theoretical Framework
What explicit theoretical framework was helpful in understanding their cultural story and your reaction to their cultural story
Reflection
Did you learn anything about yourself and how you deal with distinctiveness (Pre-conceived notions you had going into the interview? How did you form these ideas (based on what information? Family? Friends? Media? What reactions did you have when listening to the person’s story)?
Submission Format
