You must produce a 3,000 word report on tourism to a destination of your choice.

April 24, 2024

You must produce a 3,000 word report on tourism to a destination of your choice. The aim of the report is to understand the sustainability of tourism at a chosen destination. The destination can be a country, region,  or urban/rural/coastal/island destination.
Content
The report should contain the following three sections:
1. Overview of tourism to the destination
Provide an overview of tourism to your chosen destination, in terms of how it has evolved, what is there, who goes, and how it is managed. Topics to consider:
Destination evolution
Provide a brief background context on the evolution of tourism to your destination.
Tourism resources
Highlight the main types of resources provided and tourism products offered (e.g beach tourism, urban tourism, wildlife tourism, mountain tourism etc). Consider:
Tourism resources influencing attractiveness (what’s there): natural (including climate), socio-cultural, built attractions and events, amenities (accommodation, transport etc)
Wider dimensions of the destination which impact upon tourism attractiveness (e.g. perceived risk, safety, health, levels of development, cultural issues, access and connectivity, image, cost etc)
From this, you should be able to identify what makes the destination attractive, and any barriers to tourism.
Tourism flows
Using UNWTO data, provide data on tourism flows to your destination. For this, discuss:
Tourism arrivals and expenditure: recent data and trends. Explain flows to your region and any trends or issues that emerge. (What has led to growth, or are there barriers limiting tourism in the region?)
Generating countries: the main source markets, main purpose of visits?
Domestic tourism: how does this compare to inbound tourism?
Seasonality: What is the seasonal pattern of arrivals? Why is this?
Not all this data may be available for your chosen destination.
Destination management
Discuss how tourism is managed at your destination, and any existing tourism plans or strategies that exist. Consider:
What DMOs exist?
What are the visions or aims of any existing tourism policies or plans?
2. Tourism issues in your destination
Consider what issues tourism faces in the chosen destination which impact upon its sustainability. Focus on the main issues the destination faces e.g. environmental impacts, economic leakages, quality, social impacts, connectivity, congestion, safety etc.
3. A sustainable future
Consider a way forward for the destination to address the main issue (s) to become more sustainable in the future, taking the SDGs into account. This will depend upon your analysis of your chosen destination, but may include one (or more) of the following:
Tourism supply:
– Issues of capacity and quality of accommodation and services
– The range of attractions and activities available at the destination
Destination management
– Economic impacts (level of tourism spending retained locally)
– Social impacts
– Environmental impacts
– Seasonality
Tourism planning and development:
– The spread of tourism activity within the destination
– Type of visitor (balance between volume and value)
– Length of stay (day visitors vs staying)
– Access to destination
– Safety and security
((THE citation style should be BU Harvard style ))
Marking strategy (linked to GAC matrix):
Subject knowledge and understanding
Clear knowledge and understanding of tourism within the destination, including its evolution, tourism resources and tourism flows, and impacts it has upon the destination.Clear understanding of key issues that need to be addressed.
