This 4 page paper is a comparison between the ideas in the movie Ex Machina and the various ideas on what constitutes a mind, presented by the philosophers in this unit. The unit inclues theories about physicalism, mind-body dualism, functionalism, and eliminative materialism. The paper MUST reflect the following outline.
Develop your point of view, in this case, your view on which idea about the mind from the ones we read, comes closest to the view or views presented in the movie Ex Machina
Support your point of view (what evidence can you offer?)
Consider other points of view (what evidence is there that points away from your point of view, and how would you answer that?)
Arrive at a conclusion
Do not use any source, citations, or referrences, this is not a research paper, it should not include anything outside of Ex Machina and the corresponding philosophers from the previously mentioned unit subjects.
This includes spelling and grammar, and the structure of your paper. You will need to write the paper in a formal academic style. Your introduction will be very short–it is fine with me to start with your thesis sentence, and then begin making your case. No clear thesis sentence is an automatic deduction. How do I know how to grade the paper if I don’t know what you are setting out to do? If you look at many philosophy papers, they often begin, “In this paper, I will defend (a position), describe that position, and then raise and answer an important counterargument.” Your performance in this area will be worth 30% of your grade.
Summary of your position. Given the information you have, I need a fairly complete summary of the position with which you are working. This will be worth 35% of your grade.
Consider other points of view, and arriving at a conclusion, is what I generally group as discussion. Raising a common objection, and then addressing it is a very good way to strengthen your own position. This is worth 35% of your grade as well.
One word: plagiarism is more than citing works that are not your own and claiming them for yourself. If you get ideas from other sources, for example, the internet, those must be cited. This is particularly important in using AI, including Chat GPT and other sites. They are increasing easy to detect. Please, just don’t.
