You began working on the argument essay with the Unit 4 introduction paragraph assignment and continued it in the Unit 5 prewriting assignment, where you began writing the body paragraphs. For this assignment, you combine, revise, and add to those two previous assignments to develop your finalized essay draft.
The essay should answer ONE of these questions:
Should cancel culture be encouraged or eliminated?
Should voting be required of all eligible citizens?
Should all high school seniors be required to take a Gap Year?
Your final submission should include:
A clear introduction that sets up the issue, explains your topics, and ends with
your thesis statement.
Body paragraphs focusing on one topic supporting your argument in each
paragraph.
o You need three reliable and academic sources for this assignment
supporting your argument. You should include evidence that is directly quoted, paraphrased, or summarized to support each topic. The evidence should have appropriate in-text citations.
o You will typically want to include one piece of evidence in the body of each paragraph. You are not required to include a source about the counterargument (other side of your argument), but you may if you would like.
End with a conclusion that wraps up your essay’s argument and leaves the reader with something to consider about your issue.
Include a references page for the three sources you used in your essay.
Note: Remember that you have already completed the introduction and two of the three body paragraphs in Units 4 and 5. As you learned last unit, revising and editing your previous work is important. Look back through your instructor’s comments and do your own revising to strengthen your final essay.

The final essay should be 3 to 4 pages in length, excluding title and reference pages.

Should Cancel Culture be Encouraged or Eliminated?
That’s a great question! I think Cancel Culture should be eliminated. For many
reasons, it has gone too far that people can no longer make mistakes. We are humans,
mistakes will always happen. The topic of cancel culture is quite interesting and can be
approached from various perspectives. Some argue that it promotes social justice and
holds individuals accountable for their actions, while others may think that it can lead to
online harassment and lack of forgiveness. It is always important to consider both sides
of the argument and gather Information from reliable sources before forming your own
opinion. It involves holding Individuals accountable for their actions by “canceling” or
boycotting them on social media or another platform. However, there is debate over
whether cancel culture has gone too far in some cases. Cancel culture looks to bring
attention to problematic behavior and create consequences for those who engage in it.
Cancel culture is very damaging to be honest. It is like we live in a generation where
what we say, or think is no longer an option because we must watch every word, or we are in the
wrong. It can be so damaging to a person physically and mentally. According to Pew Reseach
Center “[Cancel culture is] trying to silence someone that does not have the same belief as you.
Basica[it’s] taking their First Amendment rights away. It violates affected people’s civil
rights.”— Man, 50s, Conservative Republican (2021). How is a person supposed to learn from a
mistake if they are not given a chance. People are automatically judged, harassed, and bullied. It
is destructive.
In the opinion of some Americans, people are being shamed for not speaking their mind
but canceled if they do. What happened to opinions? (Vogels et al, 2021) social media is another
big one, with Tik-Tok for example posting something, if it’s not approved by some it takes one
person to explode something out of proportion for withdrawal of support and hate to come. It can
be something a person can consider offensive or problematic. Social media plays a huge role in
cancel culture as it allows people to quickly spread information and opinions about these
individuals. They don’t even take the time to hear or have valid information, they just attack. It
can lead to consequences such as loss of endorsements, job opportunities, or their public trust.
