You are the chief advisor to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Your boss has
been asked to submit a proposal to a joint legislative committee whose job it is to seek
funding from Congress in the amount of 6 billion dollars to develop a program to address
this very problem. The committee agrees that 6 billion dollars might be just enough
money to begin to address only one of many chemical concerns. Your boss has asked
you to prepare a report for him to deliver to the committee outlining which of the
environmental concerns has the greatest impact on public health and should be the one
targeted for funding. The chemicals problems up for consideration are:
1) Mercury
2) Asbestos
3) Lead
4) Radon
Your report must give a brief description of each of the chemical problems and the
impact that each has on public health. You obviously need to begin to eliminate three out
of the four as candidates for funding in order to justify the one of your choosing. Which
one you justify, how you justify it, and why is up to you but remember in justifying one
you need to make a case for not funding the others. It’s a tough choice but your job (and
your grade) depends on it.
