Determined to take advantage of the fortuitous discovery–and in light of current events over the past half-decade–he has decided to run a think piece about the history of protest in America. More than that, due to your exceptional skill as researcher and writer, after taking Freshman Composition, Ratnozo has chosen you to travel to Birmingham, Alabama in 1963, during the height of the American Civil Rights Movement and the conflict surrounding segregation in the Jim Crow South, to study Dr. Martin Luther King and his philosophies for civil disobedience, but most specifically, the events surrounding the composition of some of his most famous words in “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”
Prompt: Using your experiences in the past and the three primary source documents you brought back with you to the present, write a 750-1000 word report (essay), briefly discussing historical context, explicating three of King’s arguments in response to the Birmingham clergymen. In essence, what were King’s words? What were they written in response to? How did his words, or the subsequent actions inspired by them, change things? And most importantly, how are we still influenced by them today?
