Select a marginalized population to explore in-depth. You are to prepare a 10-15 page paper about this population and how counseling can be adapted to accommodate persons sharing this identity. The paper should include the following:
History of how this population has been viewed and treated in the United States and globally, including historical social movements and the multigenerational effects of trauma and other stressors.
Current issues on this cultural group in the United States and globally, including the effects of socio-cultural influences, public policy, and recent social movements.
An explanation of how the past & recent history of this group has impacted poverty, income disparities, and health disparities.
An explanation of how the past & recent history of this group has impacted mental health, physical health, and overall wellness.
The influence of heritage, cultural identities, attitudes, values, beliefs, understandings, within-group differences, and acculturative experiences on help-seeking and coping behaviors.
The potential impacts that stereotypes, overt and covert discrimination, racism, power, oppression, privilege, marginalization, microaggressions, and violence may have on counselors and clients within the counseling relationship.
Strategies the counselor can take to identify and reduce or eliminate barriers, prejudices, and processes of intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination within the counseling relationship.
Strategies for adapting and accommodating the counseling process to client culture, context, abilities, and preferences.
Methods of advocacy the counselor can utilize to advocate for their individual client and the marginalized population, as a whole.
An explanation of how professional counseling organizations (e.g., ACA, AMCD, and other divisions – as relevant to your population) support your specific adaptations with diverse cultural identities, including social justice and advocacy methods.
A minimum of 10 professional sources are necessary for writing this paper. Professional journal articles should be no more than 10 years old. Reference to class discussions, as well as the course text, may be used in this paper in addition to the 10 scholarly resources. Properly cite and reference all resources used in this assignment. The written analysis paper must be submitted in APA 7.0 format. The paper should be approximately 10 to 15 typed pages (NOT including the title, abstract, and references pages) with standard one-inch margins and 12-point font. Points will be deducted for grammatical and spelling errors. This will ensure a top-quality paper, which will benefit you significantly in this course, and in your professional life.
PLEASE NOTE: Because this is an assessment probe, you must score 80% or better (at least 160 points out of 200) on the paper in order to pass the course. If you do not score at least 80%, you will be given one opportunity to revise your paper. If you still do not score 80% on the paper, you will fail the course and will need to retake it. You cannot pass the course unless you earn a minimum of 80% on the probe.
