Writing Assignment 1
Name
The essay must be in your own words. Use sources only as appropriate to what the option asks, citing the sources according to an acceptable academic style, like MLA or APA. Include in-text citations where appropriate.
Whichever option you choose, there should be greater emphasis on demonstrating a thought process than on researching information.
The points listed under each option may serve as an outline.
Option One
Choose a painting or sculpture and provide a discussion/analysis using the list of points below. It may be helpful to use something you have a familiarity with or have seen in person for the purpose of providing perspective. While not required, looking for something in the city you live in might be a useful starting place.
The paper should contain each of the following:
Basic information that BRIEFLY familiarizes the reader with any factual or historical information regarding what you have chosen, and states specifically where your information comes from.
A detailed description of the piece you have chosen, allowing the reader to visualize the work (though you are welcome to add images if you desire).
An explanation of why you chose this work, including any observations you wish to make concerning its meaning or significance.
Option Two
Choose a musical instrument (other than voice) and at least one musical piece that makes dominant use of this instrument.
BRIEFLY discuss the historical or cultural background of the instrument you have chosen and say where that information comes from.
Provide a detailed description of the music you are using, and the role that the instrument has, including how the style of music either determines the use of the instrument or the instrument impacts the overall effect of the music (for example, some instruments bend notes and other do not, making the mood dependent on the choice of instrument).
Discuss the music either in terms of personal impact (its emotional impact or other associations) or as an expression of a particular culture or historical moment.
Option Three
Chapter 7 of Theatrical Worlds is about genres (categories) of theater and defines nine terms. “Tragedy” is one example.
Find an example that fits one of these terms, either in a live performance or in cinema. Your essay should
BRIEFLY provide relevant background to the work you have chosen, saying where your information comes from.
Provide a detailed description of the work.
Explain how the work illustrates major characteristics of the genre, or how a single acting performance is particularly appropriate to the genre.
Criteria
These will be graded on the following:
1. Organization – the paper should be logically arranged according to the points provided, with each section well-structured.
2. Development – each point should have sufficient and relevant detail and thought.
3. Clarity – I look at all elements of writing, so the paper should show attention to details like sentence structure, editing, formatting, punctuation, word choice, and tone.
4. Subject Matter – the subject of your paper is up to you within the boundaries described in each option, but its significance and depth will help produce a fully developed paper.
No credit will be given to plagiarized work.  See statement on Scholastic Honesty.
Be sure to use complete sentences and proper grammar, and run spell check on your work. Answer all parts of the topic. You are encouraged to use references in addition to the text. Be sure to list all the references used to complete your work.
Do not copy and paste information directly from the Internet – this includes charts, graphs, or pictures – without giving full credit to the source. If in doubt, do not use it.
