Writing Assignment 2: Policy Analysis
Critically analyze your selected policy, identify existing bills, and propose a solution.
Use data and peer-reviewed literature throughout your research paper in addressing the following.
1. Analyze Current Legislation
Explain the strengths and weaknesses of your selected policy, using data and peer reviewed literature.
○ Include a discussion of who gains and who loses from the policy.
○ Explain whether the policy marginalizes any population it intends to serve.
○ Discuss what information is made available to the public to track policy outcomes related to this law.
○ Describe whether the policy has had any unintended consequences.
○ Discuss any literature on the effectiveness of program(s) or regulations related to the policy.
From the above analysis, identify the most critical gap in the current policy. You can focus on the policy design or implementation. Provide data on the impact of the policy gap, including the inequities it causes and the particular population(s) affected.
2. Analyze Current Legislative Bills/Proposals
Identify and briefly describe an advocacy organization working to fix this policy gap. Describe any bills or policy approaches they are currently supporting.
Explain any other significant bill that has been proposed to fill the policy gap, including the current stage of the bill.
If no new bill has been proposed, please explain why you think this issue is not currently being addressed.
Explain how the proposed bills will reduce inequity, address marginalization, increase effectiveness, or address an unintended consequence.
3. Make Your Legislative Recommendation
Based on your analysis of current proposals, explain what type of legislative change (i.e. new bill, amendment, repeal) is needed to fill the identified policy gap.
Guidelines: Paper length is 5 pages and must include at least 6 reputable references. Paper should include a title page and references in APA style. These are not included in the page count.
