The simulated excavation activity is meant to be a plausible reconstruction of the types of archaeological remains you might find at sites in the Bay Area using previous ARF excavations as examples. If you choose to do so, you can perform historical research using the internet or library resources to further support your observations.
Cite any sources you use briefly in-text, e.g. (Author Year), with full citations on a separate page. Wikipedia does not count as a source, but it may be a good starting place for you! Each interpretation you make needs to be plausibly linked to the archaeological materials you described!
Each person will need to turn in the following items per the instructions of your GSI:
Your team’s map and any sketches you have made
Notes on the archaeological materials
Typed responses to your in-class worksheet (this does not count towards your page requirement)
Your own write-up interpreting materials from the simulated excavation.
A works-cited page
Important definitions:
Synchronic (in archaeology): Being of a single time. Focuses on culture at a single point in time.
When answering this question, think about what elements of your unit belong to a specific time period.
Diachronic (in archaeology): Refers to an analysis over periods of time, changes, and evolution.
In the context of this exercise, consider whether your unit has evidence of multiple periods of time (E.g., Native CA and something that a previous section left behind). Also, consider elements you cannot set in a specific chronology. The items all belong to the past, but is it obvious that they are both from the same period?
We understand that not all units have the same characteristics or that not all teams examined their units to the same level of detail. Answer the questions of the rubric to the best of your ability/ understanding. Talk to your GSI if you need extra help.
