Pre-Read. Read the secondary sources concerning Hesiod and Hesiod’s Theogony.
Read. Read Hesiod’s Theogony while paying special attention to both the style of his writing and the content of his text.
Response Prompt. Now that you’ve read about the origins of the Greek gods, you’re going to create your own origin story in the style of Hesiod’s Theogony. I want you to think about the style of his writing as well as the content of his writing. Then choose some aspect of your own life to tell your own origin story (being born? graduating high school? starting a sport? etc.). Regardless of what you choose, try to mimic the epic style of Hesiod. There’s no right or wrong answer here, as long as you can justify your decisions. Write at least 150 words of your own “origin story” then supplement it with at least 150 more words describing how your stylistic choices mimicked Hesiod’s style. Support your analysis of the relationship between your origin story and Hesiod’s Theogony with at least three references to the ancient text.
