Scholar Activism of community engagement relevant to the class = 25%. Choose an organization that works in the area of law and volunteer for at least 15 hours to learn beyond the boundaries of the class and offer your knowledge to help to improve the community. Write an essay of not more than 3000 words of what you learned and your recommendations for improving the work of the organization. Use at least five scholarly references and reflect race-class-gender issues as much as possible.
I have uploaded a paper that describes the Scholar Activism Paradigm in Africana Studies. This should be read before you get started to give you an idea of what is expected. Use the same rubrics for your mid-term exam for all your assignments.
In the past, students have completed this assignment by working to help raise funds and awareness for organizations that are relevant to law and criminology. You may have your own preferred groups but it may interest you to know that some students have volunteered for Legal Defense Fund of the NAACP, The Southern Poverty Law Center, Prison Radio, Innocence Project, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Students for a Sensible Drug Policy, #BlackLivesMatter etc. Even if you volunteer as a group, your report will be your individual reflections about what you learned from this assignment.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, students have tried fasting for 24 hours as a way to experience what prisoners go through when they are on hunger strike and then they donate the money saved on food to their preferred organizations. You can also ask family and friends to join you in fasting to raise more. Talk to your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough to fast before you start.
Some students have also tried Crowd funding or help with updating/creating websites for organizations as part of scholar0-activism. Some have joined campaigns for legal reform by organizing letters to law makers.
