An Overview of Dyslexia (youtube.com).
responsd to these writing.
1) Which foundational resource was chosen? Why?
I chose Dyslexia, Myths, and Facts because I wanted to educate myself about dyslexia misconceptions to better understand dyslexia and serve future students accurately. Misconception and misinformation can result in incorrect decisions, which can affect students’ learning.
What are some of your key takeaways from the resource?
Among the most important things I learned from these sources are that only 1 in 10 dyslexics will be eligible for an IEP and special education services, and that dyslexia affects 5–10% of the population. It makes me wonder how the other 90% population with dyslexia manages. Students with dyslexia will not benefit from reading aloud because doing so makes it harder for them to sound out unfamiliar words.
How do you see this resource useful in your classroom placement, professional goals, etc.?
I may have met dyslexic students without realizing it due to inexperience and misunderstanding. I can use this information to help both my current and future students.
Why might others find this resource helpful?
There is a 10% chance that someone you encounter has dyslexia. These resources will make it easier to comprehend your coworker, neighbor, or child who has dyslexia. This knowledge will make you more aware of their struggles and open your eyes.
How might you use this resource to support the creation of your SLO artifact?
I chose option 5 identify five common misconceptions about dyslexia. This resource is directly connected to my SLO artifact to identify common misconceptions about dyslexia.
What questions/wonderings came up as you reviewed the resource?
How do the remaining 90% of people with dyslexia cope when the condition affects 5–10% of the population and only 1 in 10 of them receive special education services? Also, I wonder if different races and genders are affected by dyslexia differently.
2)
Which foundational resource was chosen? Why? The one that stuck out to me are Dyslexia, Myths, and Facts. This one hit me because so many teachers, specialists, etc, tend to misdiagnose this, and we are still learning more about it. I found it interesting because I have Dyslexia. Luckily, they got it early on, which has helped me be better and connect with my students who tend to struggle a little more.
What are some of your key takeaways from the resource? I liked that they presented the myths and backed them up with the common facts, which gave me an “aha” moment. This helped me understand how we can learn more about it!
How do you see this resource useful in your classroom placement, professional goals, etc.? This will help me design lesson plans and activities that will help my students better understand and read and understand what they are doing. I had to learn this from a young age, and it helped me better understand how my students are struggling.
Why might others find this resource helpful? Teachers, especially in special education, definitely help us gain knowledge and understanding of dyslexia and how we can help our students learn and understand it better. This also allows me to connect to the struggles that they are facing, like mine!
How might you use this resource to support the creation of your SLO artifact? I used my one-week literacy plan with standards and broke down what we were going to do. I have some amazing websites; even though they seem babyish, my students tend to enjoy them a lot since they are fun and interactive! Which I will include at the end of my response! You are more than welcome to it!
3) What foundational resource was chosen? Why?
The resource I chose was Dyslexia Myths and Facts. I chose this resource for a few reasons. First off, since I am dyslexic myself I was curious of what other people’s misconceptions of dyslexia are. I also wanted to learn about these commonly thought myths to help educate people on what dyslexia actually is and that it can affect people differently.
What are some of your key take aways from the resource?
There are more misconceptions of dyslexia than I had anticipated.
Some of these myths I believed myself to an extent.
There needs to be more conversations and education on what dyslexia is and what it is not.
Dyslexia affects more of the population than I previously believed.
How do you see this resource useful in your classroom placement, professional goals, etc.?
I can use thus resource to educate myself and my students to better understand what their classmates with dyslexia may be experiencing.
It can also help make the students more understanding as to create a more safe and friendly classroom environment so my students with dyslexia don’t have to feel embarrassed, like I did as a child, if they are struggling.
How might you use this resource to support the creation of your SLO artifact?
This resource will help me identify the most common myths about dyslexia and the facts to create my dyslexia misconceptions graph.
What questions/wonderings came up as your were viewing the resource?
I wonder how these myths came to be.
I wonder why people believe dyslexia effects intelligence.
