Write a visual and contextual analysis paper on the specified artwork.

June 30, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

You will need to write a visual and contextual analysis paper on the specified artwork. I will include an image of the work with full ID information for the artwork (artist if known, title, date, medium, size, location if available) via weblink which will need to be added at the end of your essay. You will need to conduct some research on the artwork and historical and cultural contexts for the artwork to complete this paper. You will need to include research from at least 1 book (or book chapter), 1 museum website other than from the museum you choose your artwork, and 1 digital or print art magazine or newspaper. Please be sure to only use reliable and scholarly sources for your research, for example: books and book chapters, academic journal articles, art magazines, museum websites, and artists’ websites. You can also use your class textbooks or any other class reading as a source for this paper. Do not use encyclopaedias, personal blogs, or wiki pages as sources – they are simply not reliable or scholarly because they are not written by experts and often not well-researched. You must include citations and a bibliography in a format of your choosing (MLA, Chicago, or APA style). If you have any questions about how to include citations and a bibliography, or what style of formatting to choose, please ask me, look at the KCAD library website that includes citation documents, or search on the internet for citation guides.
Your paper must include an introduction, thesis, analysis, and a conclusion paragraph.
Introduction: Create an introduction that sets the stage for your paper by briefly describing the artwork you are analysing – what are we looking at? What is the subject matter, style, and medium of the artwork? When was it made? How is the overall composition organised?
Thesis: The thesis is a one-sentence argumentative statement that comes at the end of your introduction. This should be the main point around which you plan to organise your paper. It can be about the techniques/ materials of the artwork, the subjects and/or themes of the artwork, the way in which the artwork speaks to specific political or social or other ideas, or any combination of these.
Analysis: The paper’s body should incorporate a visual analysis of your chosen piece that describes the formal and contextual aspects of the artwork, taking into consideration the elements of art and principles of design that are most significant in the artwork, medium, cultural context(s), function(s), artist’s style, meaning/ message, and possibly original ownership and/ or patron(s) of the work or structure if this is an important aspect of the artwork’s context and/or meaning. Your analysis should be written to support the argument you are making in your thesis, using the visual and conceptual aspects of the artwork, as well as the research you conduct, to support your ideas.
Conclusion: The conclusion should wrap up your main ideas and summarise what you have said in the rest of your paper. Do not introduce anything new in the conclusion and do not repeat exactly the same thing you have already said in your introduction. Please be as detailed as possible in your visual and contextual analysis. Ask yourself questions as you are studying the artwork. Consider, for example, how each element of the artwork contributes to the work’s overall composition, subject matter, and meaning. How do elements relate to each other? What effect is produced by their juxtaposition? How would this work have been used in its culture/ time period: what was its function or purpose? Who was the artist that produced it? What was their immediate artistic context? Does this work fit within their general style? Why might the artist have made this work? Did someone else – a specific person or organization – pay for its production? If yes, how might this have affected the artwork? Is there a social, political, or other message embedded in this work, beyond its formal elements?Avoid expressive language that is subjective, such as “amazing,” “breathtaking,” “beautiful,” etc. As subjective statements, these terms cannot tell your reader what your artwork looks like or means, which is the point of this paper. Explain how the elements of art and principles of design work together to create an overall effect. Do not simply list the elements and principles, but rather explain how they lead to or support your analysis. Include only the elements and principles you find most important in the artwork to explain and support your analysis. You do not need to include everything you saw since this excess information may detract from your main ideas.
Avoid making grand claims: for example, don’t write things like: “Throughout the history of art…” or “All artists focus on showing emotion ….” Instead focus directly, specifically, and precisely on your single chosen artwork right from the start of your paper. Please remember to spell check and proofread your paper before submitting it. Correct grammar and spelling are essential elements for a clear, well-written paper.
