Write a two-paragraph analysis about which of two artists Dante would have chosen to illustrate the Inferno William Blake or Gustave Doré .The illustrations from both the artist William Blake or Gustave Doré can be found in the attachemnt (use them only). You’ll choose two Inferno illustrations by each artist as well as selections from the text as evidence to support your analysis.
First you’ll decide which of two artists — William Blake or Gustave Doré — Dante would have picked to illustrate the Inferno. Once you make your choice, you will explain why, which means establishing what the author’s purpose was in the first place. Then you’ll show how the artist you’ve selected fulfills that purpose.
The first paragraph should explain Dante’s overall purpose for writing the Inferno, based on what you’ve learned in the unit. The second paragraph should go into detail about why Dante would have chosen one artist and not the other.
How both paragrphs should be:
After the topic sentence in each paragraph, you will present your evidence. In this assignment, each paragraph will bolster your analysis with a different kind of support:
Paragraph 1 will give evidence about the author’s intent. Which passages from the author’s story supply clues about the author’s purpose? What facts from his personal life provide hints?
Paragraph 2 will make connections between the author’s purpose and the works of the artist you’ve chosen. Which details from the artist’s images seem to fall in line with the author’s purpose?
Your assignment should include the following elements:
Two paragraphs, one about Dante’s overall purpose and one about the artist you’ve chosen
Each paragraph should have at least 7-10 complete academic sentences, and at least 2 different pieces of quoted evidence(The evidence should be from only these cantos: 1,4,6,7,9,12,13,14,15,19,21,22,23,24,32,33,34)
Instructions for para 1 :After you write the topic sentence, spend the remaining sentences in the paragraph showing which parts of the author’s story give clues about his purpose. Tie these pieces of evidence together with commentary that reminds the reader what your point is.
Instructions for para 2 :Now you want to show how the illustrations of one of the two artists fit that purpose. Before you start, ask yourself:
Which artist’s illustrations seem to match the message, experience, or emotion that the author was trying to get across, and which artist’s illustrations would clash with that purpose?
What details from the artist’s illustrations seem to match the author’s intent? Is the author’s intent better shown through realistic, abstract, or surreal images? Are the characters, scenes, or actions that the artist emphasizes the same characters, scenes, or actions that you think the author emphasizes?
Topic sentences that explain the purpose of each paragraph
Evidence from the Inferno and from the work of the artist you’ve chosen that supports your opinion
Make sure you cite your evidence! For example, if I use a quote from Canto XI, I would need to put a citation in parentheses after my quote like this: “quote from the Inferno here”(Canto XI, pg. 72), example In Act III, scene i, of Julius Caesar, Cassius asks, “How many ages hence / Shall this our lofty scene be acted over / In states unborn and accents yet unknown!” (III.i.122-24). Shakespeare himself may as well have uttered these lines.Your evidence: relevant evidence, to be exact. Each quote, paraphrase, or descriiption you give in one of your paragraphs should be directly related to the topic and analysis that you introduced in your topic sentence.
Overall,Your two paragraphs should naturally work together to present the same overall analysis. The first should show a sound understanding of Dante’s purpose and intent, and the second should give a thorough analysis of either Doré’s or Blake’s artistic interpretation of the Inferno.Remember that your assignment should provide direct and specific evidence from the Inferno and the work of the artist you’ve chosen.
