Alvin Ailey is a famous choreographer and director known for his expertise in modern dance and the African American cultural dance experience. He was first introduced to dance by performances of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the Katherine Dunham Dance Company and eventually began his dance training at the hands of Lester Horton’s dance classes. Shortly after Horton’s death, Ailey began his career as a director of the Lester Horton Dance Theater where he was able to create and choreograph his works. In 1958, he founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater where he dedicated his company to enriching the American modern dance heritage while also preserving and carrying on the teachings of the African-American cultural experience. One of Ailey’s most famous and well-adored dances is called “Revelations” which uses African-American spirituals, and gospel songs, and explores the emotions of grief and joy. It expresses his style of dance by using expressive hand movements, jumps, turns, and having the dance moves match the music and the story being told. Revelations explore the emotional spectrum of the human condition by diving into the deepest of grief and the holiest joy in a 36-minute long story that can be split into three different parts. The video I chose contains clips from each of the dances so that you can experience the story without having to watch the entire dance.
write a short overview of the video you found explaining who the dancer/choreographer is and why you chose this particular representation of the assigned modern dancer.
