One experience that I drew from a camper who attended camp jened was when they said, “It was so funky. But it was a utopia. When we were there, the outside world didn’t exist. This connects to a quote I found relevant in page 86 of the smart reading, “Indeed, there are strong historical arguments for the profound power of a separate deaf culture and for the viability of deafness as a way of life different from, but equal to, traditional hearing culture. I found both quotes to highlight how a profound culture can develop in the spheres of people with disabilities, and thus a new way of life that is essential to how people with disabilities identify with. In addition, this highlights how the traditional world culture around disabilities can melt away to reveal a whole new world, without the paradigm between a person with disabilities and a person without disabilities. Another experience that I drew from, and this is paraphrasing, is when the camp director paraphrased the origins of the camp. At first, he said, the camp was a normal summer camp, but over time, the camp changed to one that would try to create an enviorment where teenagers could be teenagers, and a person with disabilities could be a teenager in a healthy enviorment. This fits with how one might treat disabilities with the enviormental lens, as stated in page 65 of the shapiro text. “Essentially, environments can limit physical access and opportunities for work, education, and social participation. If a person with paraplegia does not have a wheelchair, then the impact of the paraplegia is greater.” Thus, it seems obvious, that the camp director subscribed to how an enviorment could be natually hostile to a person with disabilities, and thus create a place where the enviroment could be friendly to a person with disabilities. Camp Jened hosted a different enviorment from what society is like on a day to day basis for a person with disabilities.
