The check list is:
Step 1: Topic Research
Read the Library Search Tips guide
Use the databases that are linked in Resources (i.e., Google Scholar, CINCH, Criminal Justice Abstracts, and SCOPUS)
Your resources should be:
academic sources (must be peer reviewed)
government sources (including current empirical crime data and evaluations)
current (the most recent you can find)
locally relevant (WA policy)
Survey, skim, and scan to find the relevant articles, and parts of articles
Go to Resource: CRAAP Test and complete the activities to practise evaluating sources
Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose
Take note of useful information and include reference information (e.g., citation with page number) for each note
Things to consider:
What is the problem that the policy wants to address – what is your focus (if it is a complex policy)
What does the evidence say about the problem the policy is targeting?
Has the policy been tried elsewhere?
Is there (quantitative/qualitative) evidence that the policy is (in)effective?
What are the possible beneficial/detrimental effects of this policy?
Step 2: Policy Response Plan
Carefully read page 1 of STUDYSmarter Survival Guide – Writing Critically for ideas on how to structure your policy response
Plan your policy document response using cover these main points:
Title- make it interesting! Attract the readers / markers attention with an capturing title
Introduce the policy and research question you have identified
Provide some background to the policy – what does it entail, why did you choose to research this area, and how did you develop the research question for your response
Research question. Start your argument with a research question or a clear statement of what the essay aims to do and how.
Body: This is where you will critique the policy using the research evidence you have synthesized. Add a paragraph for each main idea, including:
Use meaningful subheadings to structure your paper
Topic sentence stating the main points
Stick to one key idea per paragraph for clarity
Critical review of evidence – be analytical instead of descriptive, avoid emotive language
develop and support your position referring to existing theories/research
provide examples from scholarly sources, such as peer-reviewed articles
compare and contrast approaches
interpret data, evidence, or findings
explain concepts or theories
evaluate theories, arguments, and evidence
identify any gaps or limitations in the existing research
Concluding sentence summarising the points, linking to next paragraph/argument
Policy advice: reiterate the claims in the introduction and refer back to the policy. Make recommendations about the policy based on your research – the intent is that, by the end of the document, the reader is clear what your thoughts on the policy are. These thoughts need to be grounded in the evidence that you have presented in a coherent, concise way.
Reference List: include a list of all references that you cited using APA7 referencing style – use the original source wherever possible instead of a secondary source. Consult the library resources if needed.
Step 3: Write the Policy Document
Carefully read page 2 of Resource: STUDYSmarter Survival Guide – Critical Writing and Arguments for useful language you can use in your essay
Building on your draft, write your policy response. As it is about your own view, you are allowed to write in the first person.
Things to remember:
Academic writing: use a mixture of complex and simple sentences and define unfamiliar terms
Clear writing: Ensure that your arguments are direct and easy to understand
Critical writing: critically review the evidence you have gathered and integrate it with empirical crime data
Accurate writing: present accurate and complete information, and demonstrate that you have conducted thorough background research
Respectful writing: see guidelines in additional sources
TIP: to avoid plagiarism, you must give credit if you use the work of others (see Referencing section in Cadmus Manual)
Step 4: Revise
Review the Turnitin Report for paraphrasing and/or citation errors
Edit and proofread your work carefully for grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors
Ensure all citations match references
Read your work critically to ensure you have built an effective argument and critically reviewed the evidence
