A character sketch is a descriiption of a character, often discussing their physical characteristics, personality, psychology, habits, etc. The character sketch might also mention important locations, possessions, or loved ones—anything that helps us to understand the character better.
The brief character sketch we did for Tandolfo is a good start for thinking about this. Here’s how I wrote the brief character sketch:
Tandolfo (or Rodney) is a lonely 26-year-old party clown who wants to win the heart of the woman he loves.
You can start your sketch with something similar. Your character sketch should be an original character YOU have created, and it should also be more developed. You can use the brief character sketch formula as your first sentence if you want, and then develop from there.
Write a Character Sketch
Write a character sketch using objects, landscape, weather, etc., and any other significant details to intensify the reader’s sense of what the character is like. The purpose is to create a convincing character using specific details to give us a sense of who this person is, inside and out. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs.
