As a support services professional, you may encounter ethical dilemmas, and it is important to understand the code of ethics and how it can help to resolve these ethical dilemmas.
Read the case study provided of Jared, who is incarcerated for the second time on charges of distribution of an illicit substance.
In your local community, Jared Johnson (42) has been arrested and indicted on charges of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. In his case study, his background indicates these charges are his second time to be charged. He is going back to prison for a term of approximately 5–10 years with parole. His first set of charges arose when his neighbor called the police because of continual drug activity at his house and the endangerment of his child (10). Since it was his first offense, he only served 2 years and probation. In this second set of charges, a routine probation check of his home discovered 28 grams or more of cocaine in his room. This discovery led to the finding of other drugs throughout the home. Johnson is currently being held in the local jail while sentencing and placement occurs.
As a professional service worker, you are tasked with working with Jared at the jail. Your supervisor is concerned about future interactions between Jared and the jail populations because he still has access to drugs, represents someone who is providing drugs in a drug-affected area, and has endangered his child through his actions.
Write a 700- to 1050- word analysis of the case study. Consider how you or others might use ethical codes to guide your interactions with and case planning for Jared.
Include the following:
Describe any potential ethical dilemmas you may encounter when working with Jared.
Name at least two (2) specific standards from a specific ethical code that may help guide your interactions with Jared.
Explain how these ethical standards will help you ensure the quality of care provided.
Cite at least 2 sources, including the code of ethics used.
