Write a 2-3 paragraph essay (approximately one to two double-spaced pages)
What should we do with the art of men who’ve been accused of horrible things? In the articles we read this week, Roxanne Gay argues we should ignore their art completely. We shouldn’t listen to their music, see their comedy, or watch their movies. Lionel Shriver, on the other hand, says the art is important, not the artist. She says good art doesn’t need to come from good people. Moreover, she argues that if you want to protect the personal lives of artists, you still can’t make that decision for other people.
Where do you fall? Can you completely separate the art from the artist? Should you? If so, are there any limits? Would you hang Adolf Hitler’s paintings? Does the severity of the misdeed matter? Be specific. If you shouldn’t separate the art from the artist, then what level of misdeed disqualifies art for you?
Be sure to distinguish your personal feelings from what you think society at large should do.
