Write a 12-15-page historiographical essay in which you compare and contrast the
scholarship in the field of women’s and gender history of late nineteenth/early
twentieth-century Egypt. The scholarly focus in the 1980s and 1990s was on the
Egyptian women’s movement in keeping with a more general interest in the study of
social movements, on the one hand, and women’s agency on the other. Gender
historians of the late 1990s and early 2000s began to shift the focus elsewhere. Please
analyze both scholarly trends with attention to the following elements: subject matter,
arguments, use of evidence, and methodological approach. Also address the emergence
of new questions, arguments or themes and/or the persistence or development of
interpretive differences. Discuss the overall strengths and weaknesses in the literature
as a whole.
