Without Conscience. The Disturbing World of Psychopaths Among Us
For this assignment, I would like a 3-page paper that at minimum addresses all guiding questions below, though you are encouraged to provide more than what I suggest below to provide a comprehensive paper. In addition to Dr. Hare’s textbook, I expect you will provide at least 3 peer-reviewed sources (websites do not count, they must be scientific studies that come from a scientific journal) and cite them in text and at the end of the paper APA style. If you are uncertain how to cite in APA style, you are encouraged to view the writing center on campus or come to my office with specific questions.
The body of your paper must be 3 pages long, single spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, no larger than 1” margins all around the document. You may include a title page, but this does not count toward your page count. Include an APA style References section at the end of your paper which also does not count toward the page count.
Summarize Dr. Hare’s book, Without Conscience. Please elaborate on at least 3 cases that he discusses in the book that were most salient to you and discuss why those stood out to you.
Provide all diagnostic criteria for antisocial personality disorder (psychopathy), including examples for each symptom. Discuss the typical age that you would see the onset of these symptoms.
Discuss the theories around development of psychopathy. How and why do some people develop psychopathy? What can be done to reduce the likelihood of developing these characteristics?
Define and discuss Dr. Hare’s perspective of psychopathy versus antisocial personality disorder. How and why are they distinct. Do you agree or disagree with this distinction? Why or why not?
Summarize all key aspects of the Psychopathy Checklist (e.g., how is it assessed, what is the intended population, how long does it take to administer, what is the validity and reliability of the measure, etc.). Is this a valid method of evaluating psychopathy? Why or why not? What are alternative ways to explore for possible psychopathy? Be sure to provide peer-reviewed citations to support your statements.
Review three different treatment methods used on persons with psychopathy. Please elaborate on each method, including the population, length of treatment, type of treatment, and success rates. Be sure to provide peer-reviewed citations for each of these. State which technique you would use as a treating clinician and why.
