Modern humans have become one of the most social species in the animal kingdom that rely on cooperation to survive and thrive. Without some resemblance of structure, it would be impossible for any form of society to function successfully and for humans to be able to work together. Therefore, it is imperative that we are moral so that we can survive equally in harmony with each other and further our growth and evolution as a race. ”
In this paper I hope to be able to briefly cover topics such as relativism, intuitionism, and egoism. I also want to tie in pieces we’ve read, or will read, such as Plato’s Crito and whether Crito’s actions of saving Socrates can be viewed as moral or not, and how people can be moral due to conscience or because they care about the opinions of others. Another example I’d like to use could be some chapters on religion in our textbook. Many people base their morality off of religious beliefs and I believe this would be another great angle to view the topic from.
Two criticisms I’d be defending it from could be first, on Nietzsche’s stance that morality delivers objective truths, is restrictive and prevents one from living to their fullest potential. Second, I could go into how morals is often confused for ethics, and similarly are decided based on desires that benefit a single ruling power.
